Volume V of the compact disc series, "America's Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax" received the nomination in the Best Classical Album category.
The disc contains a recording of Frank Ticheli's "Back Burner" by two current and two former Ball State students. They recorded the selection last spring while performing as the Ball State Saxophone Quartet.
"They are the only student group to appear in the series," said music professor George Wolfe, who directed the group's performance and submitted it for inclusion in the series.
Ryan Muncy, Sellersburg, Ind., and Eddie Rich, Scottsville, Ky., remain members of the Ball State Saxophone Quartet. Adrien Re, Muncie, Ind., and Josh Weirich, Huntertown, Ind., have graduated from the university.
Wolfe, a saxophonist, is featured on five of the series' seven discs. His performance with renowned tuba virtuoso Harvey Phillips appears on the Grammy-nominated Volume V. Wolfe and Phillips perform Walter S. Hartley's Double Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Tuba.
"As far as I know, this is the first time anyone from within the university, students or faculty, has gone this far in the Grammy selection process," said Wolfe. "It's quite an honor."
Grammy selectors will go through a second round of voting to narrow the list to five finalists. The results should be made public in February, Wolfe said.
CDs in the series can be purchased individually or in a boxed set from Arizona University Recordings at (520) 749-1732 or www.AURec.com.
