Arno Wittig returns to the campus to fill his old job vacated with the sudden death last week of Dean Bruce Meyer.
"I am most grateful to Arno for agreeing to help us in a true hour of need, since under his leadership I know we'll not miss a beat in this important area," said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs C. Warren Vander Hill.
Vander Hill said he hopes to appoint a search committee by the end of July and begin a national search soon after that.
"This is a very attractive opportunity and I expect the position to be filled by this time next year," he said.
Wittig first joined the Ball State faculty in 1964 as an assistant professor of psychology, coming from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He was named acting director of the Honors College in 1984 and dean two years later.
A New York native, Wittig earned his bachelor's degree from Hobart College and a master's degree and a Ph.D from Ohio State University.
