Francis Parker
In his 30 years in the Department of Urban Planning, Francis Parker has served with distinction as department chairperson, graduate program director and student advisor. In the latter role, he has become one of the most accessible of advisors.
When he is not in class, he is in his office with the door open, and students know that they are welcome. Engaged and animated, they participate in a conversation rather than just receiving rote advice.
Also, as one of the most sought-after faculty members to serve as thesis advisor, Parker guides students in a way that allows for considerable independence but also ensures that they complete their projects. In the last three years, partially because of his efforts, the department has significantly improved the graduation rates of master's degree students.
A secret to Parker's success is his thorough knowledge of the institution. Always the first to seek flexibility in the system, he also adheres to the university's policies and urban planning's accreditation standards. As a result, the department has created independent studies and appropriate course substitutions to fit the needs of students with diverse educational experiences.
In the last three years, as the department has made several revisions to its curricula, he has pointed out unintended consequences along with proposed solutions.
For today's award, many students wrote testimonies to Parker's guidance. The words of just one of those students are telling: "Finding an open office door is the most comforting sight when a student needs help from a professor. A virtual symbol of reliability, the office of Dr. Parker is a place where answers happen -- and fast."
