Weaver has held both the acting chair position and her post as coordinator of the secondary education sequence since 1996. During the past year she led the department through the search for the new dean for the college and saw the department through a successful reaccreditation.
At the same time Weaver coordinated the team producing an electronic field trip to the Newseum in Arlington, Va., and assisted in the electronic, interactive page design project between journalism graphic students and the Chicago Tribune. She also continued to lead the secondary education sequence in carrying out summer journalism workshops and both high school and junior high journalism conferences.
"Add to all these responsibilities the Journalism Alumni Association, Student Leadership Roundtable, grants received, fund-raising, and more meetings, speakers and representations than you can imagine," said Earl L. Conn, dean of the college and the former department chair. "It all adds up to a demanding year unlike that of any other faculty member in our college and, I would dare say, on our campus."
Weaver, who joined the journalism faculty in 1977 as the department's coordinator of the secondary education sequence, was presented a plaque and a check for $1,000. The award is underwritten by the Muncie Star Press.
