Ball State University applies digital prowess to launch Beneficence Recordings (7/5/2006)

Ball State University is expanding its digital prowess by launching Beneficence Recordings.

The classical music label is being managed by the university's School of Music and already has three CDs in its catalog with more in the works. The combination of talented musicians and exceptional facilities made the record label a natural progression, said Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts.

"We've long had many world-class musicians who are equally dedicated to teaching and performing," he said. "Combine those assets with fine performance venues such as Sursa Hall and a digital recording studio, and we now have all the trappings to create a record label that serves our resident artists as well as guest musicians."

The label's inaugural offerings include the works of three Ball State professors. Cellist Mihai Tetel and pianist Robert Palmer collaborated on the recording of "La Gitana," featuring works by Brahms, Haydn and Debussy. Palmer, a Steinway Artist, has also recorded "The Romantic Spirit," featuring solo piano performances of works from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Harpist Elizabeth Richter recorded "Looking Glass River," a collection of solo harp selections, with the goal of shining a spotlight on music not often heard. The CD has already received positive reviews by music editors.

"With professional visual design, imaginative musical selections and scintillating performances, this disc could hold its own with any classical CD from a major label," wrote Roger Greive, in the May/June 2006 issue of "Harp Column."

Along with showcasing individual musicians, the record label furthers Ball State's reputation as a leader in the development of digital media content. Digital works by Ball State students, professors and staff have won consecutive Gold Student Academy Awards, dozens of regional Emmy Awards and back-to-back gold medals from the World Media Festival. The label's creation will allow the School of Music to enhance the university's growing national reputation, Kvam said.

"There's no doubt that Beneficence Recordings fits well into the university's strategic mission," he said. "Creating the label adds another strand to the rich digital tapestry we're weaving at Ball State."
