Plans in place for Focus on Asia Week (1/29/2002)
MUNCIE, Ind. - A number of free activities are planned for "Focus on Asia," a week long celebration highlighting the history, culture and contributions of Asian nations.

"There are a variety of exciting activities which seek to introduce Asia and its cultures to the Ball State and Muncie community," said Jae Park, director of Far East Programs.

An exhibit of student pottery with an Asian influence and an Asian poster exhibit can be found Feb. 10-15 at the Art and Journalism Building.

The following is a schedule for the week:

Sunday, Feb. 10

  • 2:30 p.m. "West Meets East: Asian Influences and the Contempory Western Potter," by Judy Wojcik, art professor, Ball State Museum of Art.

Monday, Feb. 11

  • 3-5 p.m., opening ceremony, L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Cardinal Hall, speeches by Jiro Maruhashi, Japanese Consul for the Japan Information Center of the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago; Dan Canan, mayor, city of Muncie; Blaine Brownell, president, Ball State University, Japanese music and reception.
  • 7-9 p.m., "Religion and Modern Life: Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Sikh Perspectives," a panel discussion moderated by Rev. Thomas Perchlik, Teacher's College, Room 101.

Tuesday, Feb. 12

  • 9-10 a.m., "Tibet: Land of Snows," presentation and discussion by Gesha Sopa and Jamyang Lama, of Dagom Gaden Tensung Ling Buddhist Monastery, Student Center, Cardinal Hall.
  • 10:30 a.m.-noon, "Social Conditions and Social Changes as Reflected in the Works of a Thai Novelist," by Rampaipan Srisopark, author of 84 novels, Student Center, Cardinal Hall.
  •  Noon-1 p.m., "The Path of Tibetan Buddhism," by Gesha Sopa and Jamyang Lama, MT Cup.
