"There are obviously a lot of people who will be needing assistance in the coming months as a result of this national tragedy," Ball State athletics director Andrea Seger says. "We know our fans in the Muncie community recognize this need and want to help the victims and their families. Ball State's athletic venues bring together a lot of people, and with the assistance of our alumni staff, we have come up with some ways that we can do our part in helping out America in this time of need. We realize that there will be ongoing financial needs for the victims and their families over many, many months, and we are happy to be able to assist with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund."
Ball State's athletics department and the alumni staff will set up stations to take donations at all of the Cardinals' home events this fall in the sports of football, women's volleyball, soccer and field hockey plus early in the men's and women's basketball seasons. In addition, the Ball State community will sponsor a toy drive around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Canisters for financial donations will be set up at the concession stands and ticket office at all venues this fall, while volunteers from the athletics department and alumni association will man stations at the home football and men's basketball games this fall.
"Ball State athletics is a very positive way for the university to try and do its part in helping out the nation," BSU alumni association executive director Ed Shipley says. "Our athletic teams provide some of our most visible means of promoting the university, and combined with the thousands of alumni we have throughout the country, we can use these venues to assist America in its time of need."
The collecting of donations will begin with Ball State's next scheduled home event and will run through the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition, various Ball State athletic teams will also wear a tribute on their uniforms during the 2001-2002 athletic seasons.
