August 2001 Story Ideas (8/1/2001)
Ball State University experts are available to provide information and background on a variety of issues. Story ideas include:

INDIANA'S MANUFACTURING BASE TO SHRINK OVER NEXT DECADE: By the year 2011, the number of Hoosiers in central Indiana with jobs in manufacturing is expected to fall below 13 percent, compared to the 20 percent in manufacturing in the remainder of the state, said Patrick Barkey, director of the Bureau of Business Research. Employment in health services outside hospitals is expected to grow by more than 75 percent over the next 10 years. Computer and data processing services will double. Also growing fast will be lower paying jobs in residential and lawn care, child care and recreation. Contact Barkey at pbarkey@bsu.edu or (765) 285-5926.

NEW GUIDEBOOK STANDARDIZES STUDENT TEACHING: A new guidebook created by Ball State faculty defines what a new student teacher should know and be able to do. It should become a model for evaluating future teachers educated at other universities and colleges, said Patricia Hughes, director of Educational Field Experiences. Contact her at phughes@bsu.edu or (765) 285-1861.

SERVICE INDUSTRY CHANGING TERMINOLOGY TO REFLECT STAFFING: Many companies in the service industry are using the term "full-time equivalents" as another way of describing part-time employees. The classification is simply another way for restaurants, in-bound call centers and similar firms to adjust scheduling to satisfy customer demands, says John C. Goodale, a management professor. For more information, contact him at (765) 285-5323 or jgooddale@bsu.edu

STUDY: SUPPORT HOSE REDUCES SWELLING, PAIN IN LEGS: Graduated compression hosiery actually reduces pain and swelling. Robert Newton, a Human Performance Laboratory researcher, found better results in leg wear that provided better support for the foot, ankle and calf and less for the thigh. For more information, contact Newton at rnewton@bsu.edu or (765) 285-5139.

TECHNOLOGY NEEDS EXPAND AT COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES: In order for higher education to remain competitive and produce technology-savvy graduates, technology must be infused into every aspect of classroom learning, said H. O'Neal Smitherman, vice president for information technology. Universities are grappling with the need to address a growing need for computer availability, personal computer usage, e-mail usage and access, Web space usage, networking and Web-related courses. For more information on how universities and colleges may address the issue, contact Smitherman at osmitherman@bsu.edu or (765) 285-4321.
