Melanie Scott has been appointed to the Ball State University Board of Trustees by Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon for a two-year term.
Scott is a junior majoring in journalism. She is the daughter of Leonard and Christine Scott, Carmel.
"I really want to make a difference for the students at this university and this made sense as the next step," Scott said.
Scott has a variety of leadership experiences that will help her serve the students at Ball State.
As a freshman Scott participated in the Excell Program, a three-day summer orientation and enrichment program for freshman students of color to become better acclimated to campus and college life. She was also a member of the Ball State Forensics Team.
During the 2000-2001 school year she was the vice president of the Black Student Association, a chair of the Miss Unity Pageant and became a student leader for the Excell Program.
"Melanie is a great example of the quality of student that you can find at Ball State," said Kathy Smith, assistant director of Leadership and Service Programs. "She is extremely mature, articulate and confident in herself."
As a representative of the student body, Scott intends to pursue two goals.
"First, I want to make students more aware of this position and how they can work with me to help improve their college careers. Second, I want to be a strong voice for the students," Scott said.
The student member on the Board of Trustees is chosen in an application and interview process conducted by current student leaders and finally the governor.
Scott replaces Nick Utley, who served on the board from 1999-2001.
Because of her past achievements and clear-cut goals, Smith has no doubts that Scott will be a successful student representative.
"Some people would be very intimidated by working with the board, but Melanie is very confident and will not be afraid to express the concerns of the students," said Smith. "She is a strong leader and will be a great student voice."
