MUNCIE, Ind.–Governor Frank O’Bannon has appointed a Muncie community leader to the Ball State University Board of Trustees.

Ceola Digby-Berry, a psychologist and owner of Associates of Mental Health, Muncie, and Anchor Behavioral Counseling, New Castle, fills a vacancy created by the death of Pennie Thomas in November. Digby-Berry’s term begins immediately and will continue until January 1, 2002.

"We are happy to hear of the appointment of Dr. Digby-Berry by the governor," said Thomas DeWeese, chairman of the Ball State Board of Trustees. "Her enthusiasm for Ball State, her past experience with the university, and her stature in the community will make her a tremendous asset to the board."

Ball State President John E. Worthen said the university is very fortunate to have an outstanding Board of Trustees.

"Dr. Digby-Berry represents an excellent addition to the board," he said.

Digby-Berry said she is excited about the opportunity to help young people.

"I want to enable students to overcome obstacles as they seek to achieve academically," she said. "Growing up in a ghetto in Buffalo, N.Y., I was the first in my family to graduate from high school. Given where I have come from, this is a great opportunity. I thank the Lord for this honor."

Digby-Berry is a member of the State Licensing Board of Psychologists. She has also served as a mental health specialist for the American Red Cross, providing counseling services following natural catastrophes and other large-scale traumatic events. She is the wife of Walter Berry, former Muncie deputy mayor.

Digby-Berry has an earned doctorate in counseling psychology from Ball State and currently serves on the board of the Cardinal Varsity Club.
