New rubber flooring is being installed in the Field Sports Building to replace worn-out flooring. Both the gym floor and the running track around the gym will be replaced by the start of the fall semester.
"The new project will have regulation basketball and volleyball courts and provide a safer, non-slip track designed to NCAA specifications," said Susan Johnson, staff architect and designer of the project.
To maintain the high quality surface, rollerblading will not be allowed on the new floor as it was on the old.
In other sports facilities improvements, new light fixtures have been installed over the main floor, practice gym and balconies of Irving Gymnasium.
The new fixtures increase light levels five times over the old system, last twice aslong, and will use about half the energy as the old unit.
Air handling units in Irving Gym are being upgraded which will provide air conditioning to the entire facility. The project will be completed by mid-August. Art Hereda is the project manager.
