MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University staff photographers won eight awards -
more than any other university - from the University Photographers Association
of America’s recent annual competition in Provo, Utah.
The UPAA represents more than 200 colleges and universities in the United
States and Canada. Member photographers are concerned with the practice of
photography as it relates to the higher education setting.
For the sixth time in seven years, John Huffer, coordinator of photographic services for Ball State, won first-place awards from the association.
Ed Self, who retired last year as coordinator of photographic services, was given the group’s Distinguished Service Award for his work as a member of the UPAA board of directors and numerous committee chairmanships. He was given a lifetime membership to the association.
Winning Ball State images were:
- First place, sports: Huffer for a computer-generated image representing Ball State’s win of the Jacoby Trophy, Mid-American Conference all-around sports champions in women's athletics.
- First place, news and features: Michael Hickey, senior photographer, for a photograph of dancers in the Mainstage Theatre.
- First place, publications: Huffer, Julie Parmerlee and Ted Buck from University Relations, for a poster promoting Ball State’s upcoming “Greening of the Campus” conference. Ball State tied with the University of Massachusetts in this category.
- Second place, sports: Don Rogers, photo lab technician, for an image taken at a Cardinal men’s basketball game.
- Third place, environmental and landscape: Rogers, for a nighttime image of the Beneficence statue.
- Honorable mention, science research: Rogers, for an image of an owl.
- Honorable mention, news and features: Rogers, for an image of a computer mouse and apple.
