MUNCIE, Ind. - Retired Ball State University mathematics professor and faculty advisor Duane E. Deal
died May 20 in Liberty Village nursing home.
Deal, 77, taught in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1952 to 1992 and served as administrative assistant, acting chair and chair. He also served on or chaired more than 50 university councils and committees. He also was a faculty sponsor for the Ball State chapter of the Theta Chi fraternity for nearly 50 years. Deal, who served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, is survived by a sister, Aletha K. Deal, Fort Collins, Colo., and three brothers, Bruce E. Deal, Palo Alto Calif.; Ervin R. Deal, Fort Collins, Colo.; and Marvin W. Deal.

A memorial service is set for 3 p.m. May 29 at the College Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Granger officiating. Meeks Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Theta Chi fraternity or the Ball State Department of Mathematical Sciences through the Ball State Foundation, or to the Muncie Public Library.
