Santa should bring ties, shirt, professional clothing to college students (12/1/2004)

College students aren't too old for a Christmas morning surprise from Santa Claus — especially when those presents include much needed clothing items for upcoming job interviews.

Shoes, shirts, jackets, belts, blouses and socks are among the items that can add the right touch to a professional wardrobe of a college student, said James Mitchell, assistant director of the Career Center at Ball State University.

"Family members might want to buy something for a college student, but often are unsure what he or she needs," he said. "The holidays provide relatives an opportunity to help students add to their professional wardrobes. Relatives can provide good advice about what works and what doesn't in the workplace since they are there every day."

According to a national recruiting survey in 2003, professional dress was the third most likely attribute to help a candidate stand out to employers during an interview. Only the candidate's company knowledge and thoughtful responses to questions ranked higher.

Researching company history and being self-aware are things job seekers can do for free, but professional dress often comes with professional price tags.

"That's why we encourage students to ask for those items as gifts," Mitchell said. "Relatives can select long-lasting, high-quality clothing that should make a solid impression."

Suitable Christmas gifts for college students include:

  • Suits
  • Shirts or blouses
  • Ties or scarves
  • Dress shoes
  • Leather portfolios
  • Time management devices, like PDAs
  • Makeovers for professional image (haircuts, manicure and pedicure)
  • Briefcases or handbags

"The key is to pay attention to the details of your wardrobe," Mitchell said. "Since first impressions are crucial, make sure you look you best."
