The Charles O. Mortensen Fellowship was created by Mortensen, who retired in 2000 after 28 years at Ball State, with an initial gift of $12,500.
Mortensen, who now resides in Janesville, Wis., joined Ball State's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management as an assistant professor in 1972 after teaching at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. He also had been employed by the U.S. Forest Service, Kalamazoo (Mich.) Nature Center and the Minnesota Environmental Sciences Foundation.
He received his bachelor's degree in 1961 from Michigan State University, a master's degree in 1965 from Indiana University and a doctorate in 1972 from the University of Wisconsin.
When the scholarship is available to be awarded, it will be listed on Ball State's Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid Web site at www.bsu.edu/finaid.
