Ball State to honor six outstanding Hoosier women (9/22/2003)
Ball State University will recognize six Indiana women Oct. 16 for their outstanding professional and personal accomplishments

The recipients of the 2003 Perham Indiana Women of Achievement Award are Indiana women, by birth or adoption, who have enriched the lives of others through their accomplishments.

Recipients were chosen by the Perham Committee of the Task Force on the Status of Women from Ball State's College of Science and Humanities.

The award honors the memory of Bernadette H. Perham, a Ball State mathematical sciences professor for 16 years. She was known for her distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service.

Perham was deeply committed to breaking down barriers to achievements for women and girls in all disciplines. She was active at the local, state and national levels on issues concerning women and girls.

Award winners and area of distinction include:

  • Kathryn M. Davis, student leadership, is a Ball State student enrolled in the Honors College. She serves on the executive committee of Phi Sigma Tau, the national honor society for philosophy, and is a coordinator for Ball State's Student Voluntary Services.
  • Molly Ford Flodder, community activism, is executive director of TEAMwork for Quality Living, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of Delaware County residents.
  • Ruth Howes, science and technology policy, retired earlier this year from Ball State after 27 years as a physics and astronomy professor. She is the chair of the physics department at Marquette University.
  • Patrice A. Keener, medical outreach, is a clinical pediatric professor, associate chair of the Department of Pediatrics, director of general and community pediatrics, and assistant dean for medical-service learning at Indiana University's School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
  • Cheryl L. Mason, science education, is a native of Gary and recently completed a term as president of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, the world's largest organization of science education researchers.
  • Erna Yackel, mathematics education, is a mathematics education professor in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics at Purdue University-Calumet.

Recipients will be honored during ceremonies in the Ball State Alumni Center, 2800 W. Bethel Ave. Reservation deadline is Oct. 3.
