Tetel founded “Aria International Summer Academy” 12 years ago, and it has been hosted for the last five years at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. Now that the cello professor is teaching at Ball State, he has decided to continue the academy in Muncie.
More than 120 students from the United States, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Israel are participating in the intensive four-week program. Thirty distinguished faculty with a national and international reputation will work and live with the students, who range in age from 14 to 30.
“The students will cover in four weeks what they usually cover in an entire semester,” said Tetel, Aria director. “Having the students and teachers living in the same residence hall creates the ambiance of a large musical family and removes the invisible barriers between the instructors and the students.”
Upon the students’ arrival, they will receive a detailed schedule, personalized for their stay. Along with an agenda of many private lessons, workshops, lectures and seminars, both the students and the instructors will fill a weekly concert schedule in Pruis Hall.
Most of the faculty concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays beginning July 11. Student concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays beginning July 12. The free concerts are open to the public and will end Aug. 2.
With so many accomplished musicians teaching and studying at Aria, there should be many great concerts, Tetel said.
Among the most recognizable musicians who will be serving as faculty include:
Violinist James Buswell, New England Conservatory, Boston
Cellist Stephen Geber, Cleveland Institute of Music
Flutist Bonita Boyd, Eastman School, Rochester, N.Y.
Clarinetist Stanley Hasty, Eastman School, Rochester, N.Y.
