“The Big Picture: Prints from the Permanent Collection,” features 44 contemporary prints handpicked from the museum’s collection of more than 4,000 prints.
“The show is not arranged in chronological order, but as a composition that would allow the prints to interact with each other as a whole,” said Patrick Flaherty, graduate assistant and the exhibit’s co-curator. “The goal was to create an aesthetically pleasing exhibition that was interesting and fun to explore at the same time.”
The prints were selected based on two criteria: technical skill and historical significance. Works by George Rouault, Sydney Chafetz and Ellsworth Kelly were selected for the former, said Flaherty, who teamed with David Johnson, assistant professor of printmaking, to select the works.
Other well-known artists in the exhibit, who were better known for their paintings or sculptures, were included in the exhibit for their historical significance.
“Artists like Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, for example, chose to make prints by working with master printers at presses or workshops,” Flaherty said.
