MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University has been nominated for a school-record 10 regional Emmy Awards.

The Cleveland chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences nominated a high definition documentary created by telecommunications instructor Jim Shasky in several categories.

Five students were also nominated for their projects. The winners will be announced June 7 at a ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio.

This is the fourth consecutive year Ball State has received nominations. In 2002, Ball State students received six nominations.

"We are very proud of our hard-working faculty and students, who represent the vision of Ball State by being a national model for telecommunications," said Nancy Carlson, chair of Ball State's telecommunications department.

Shasky's team of professionals and students were nominated for "Squeakers," a documentary on how digital media is affecting learning. The nominations were in the categories for special program; videographer, non-news; director, tape or film; editor, non-news; and best music composition.

Shasky's documentary focuses on Squeak, a highly adaptable computer software program that teaches children math, science and critical thinking skills through games. Squeak was created by Alan Kay, known as the father of the personal computer from his days with Apple Computers. The project is Ball State's first attempt at creating a film using digital equipment, which was purchased through the university's iCommunication initiative.

Funded by a $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., iCommunication will prepare students for creative, high-tech careers in digital communications.

Student nominations include:

  • Film direction: Terry Marsh, a freshman from Mooreland, director, "Lollipop," broadcast by WCRH NewsCenter 43, the university's student newscast.
  • Feature/entertainment segment: Arne Ahrens, a graduate student from Hamburg, Germany, and Kerstin Krieg, a graduate student from Aachen, Germany, entertainment segment producers, "Wonderland," Connections Live. The two are exchange students from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
  • Feature/entertainment segment: Jaron Henrie-McCrea, a sophomore from Indianapolis, entertainment segment producer, "Strumpet," Connections Live; and entertainment segment producer, "Welcome to JASH," Connections Live.
  • Best student program: Jill Siebert, a junior from Batesville, and Andy Beckman, a senior from Angola, executive producers, Connections Live.
