Alto saxophonist Adrian Re was named overall oustanding performer at the National Collegiate Jazz Festival in Mobile, Ala., the weekend of April 16-18.
Vocalist Colleen McNabb and trombonist Dave Wilken also received outstanding performer honors, and special recognition awards went to Re, McNabb, Wilken, pianist Mike Flack and guitarist Dave Park.
Ball State's Jazz Lab Ensemble won more awards than any of the other nine college jazz bands selected by audition to perform at the event. In 1995 the ensemble was among eight bands chosen to perform at the festival.
The 20-student Jazz Lab Ensemble is directed by faculty musician Larry McWilliams, director of the Ball State School of Music's jazz studies program.
The band enjoys a reputation as one of the nation's top collegiate jazz bands and has performed twice by invitation at the famous International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. The ensemble has also won numerous honor band and individual outstanding musicianship awards at the Elmhurst College Collegiate Jazz Festival in Chicago since 1980, along with awards at other noted jazz festivals around the country.
