MUNCIE, Ind. - More than 4,000 students will be recognized April 14-18 for their contributions to Ball State University during National Student Employment Week.
Sponsored by the university's Career Center, the week is designed to bring attention to students who play a role in helping Ball State operate, said Jennifer Pugh, the Career Center's student employment representative for student services.
"We all value our student employees for the multitude of roles they fill in our offices, as well as the contributions they make to the university," Pugh said. "Many departments would find it difficult to maintain customer service levels without the assistance of part-time student employees."
The Career Center is encouraging campus departments to take time during National Student Employment Week to let student employees know how much they are appreciated, she said.
"This week gives us the opportunity to show how much we care about their contributions," Pugh said. "It is also an opportunity to raise awareness, both on and off campus, of the influences student employees make in our day-to-day operations."
Ball State students work throughout campus in a variety of positions, including customer service representatives, student assistants, peer tutors, library assistants, computer programmers, intramural supervisors and graphic designers.
Another 225 students are resident assistants, undergraduate fellows and undergraduate interns.
"Working in an office or in a computer lab helps students gain much needed work experience before they enter the professional job market," Pugh said.
Research shows that students who work part-time jobs are 10 to 15 percent less likely to drop out of college. Statistics also show that more than 50 percent of Ball State student employees have a 3.0 or higher grade point average, she said.
To celebrate the week, the Career Center will draw names of student employees to receive gifts provided by local merchants.
