Entrepreneurship program and director named nation's best (3/20/2003)

MUNCIE, Ind. - The entrepreneurship program and its director at Ball State University have been ranked as the nation's best among colleges and universities in a leading business publication.

In its April edition, "Entrepreneur" magazine lists Ball State's Donald F. Kuratko as the top director of a college entrepreneurship program.

The magazine identifies and ranks schools with entrepreneurship programs in two different categories: nationally and regionally prominent. Ball State's program ranks as the nation's best regionally in a survey of fellow program directors and second in a survey of entrepreneurship faculty.

Kuratko, who founded the program in 1983, said the recognitions were especially gratifying because they result from a survey of entrepreneurship program executives, faculty and alumni.

"It is the ultimate honor for the program, the university and myself to be recognized by my peers," said Kuratko, the Stoops Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship and executive director of the Midwest Entrepreneurial Education Center. "This demonstrates that the 20 years we've developed the entrepreneurship program have paid off in terms of image, recognition and prestige the program has earned all over the country.

"Our entire vision and mission at Ball State has always been to have our best professors in the classroom," he said. "This recognition is a powerful illustration of Ball State’s continued commitment to classroom excellence.”

Ball State’s entrepreneurship program has continually earned national recognition, including annual rankings in the top-20 lists of magazines such as "Business Week," "Success" and "U.S. News & World Report."

"We're delighted that others have recognized what people at Ball State have known for years," said Lynne Richardson, dean of Ball State's College of Business. "Don Kuratko provides superb leadership for our entrepreneurship program, and it's terrific that his peers have noted this fact."

Kuratko believes Ball State's entrepreneurship program will continue to grow in stature due to the creation of the Entrepreneurship Dynamics Laboratory (EDL). The facility was created earlier this year with a $1 million federal education grant.

The laboratory positions the university’s nationally recognized entrepreneurship program to offer services to transform innovative ideas and projects into commercial applications and products.

"I believe these national rankings for our entrepreneurship program as well as the new Dynamics Laboratory will elevate Ball State University in the minds of students when they consider their options for college," Kuratko said.

"Entrepreneur" magazine, which claims a monthly readership of about two million people, is touting its first annual evaluation of the best entrepreneurship programs at U.S. colleges and universities as the most credible and comprehensive analysis of its kind.

TechKnowledge Point Corp. of Santa Barbara, Calif., conducted the study from September to December 2002.  Founded in 2001 by David Newton, TechKnowledge Point is the world’s first entrepreneurship/business development research and referral exchange.

In 1970, a national survey of business schools found only 16 courses offered in entrepreneurship. Over the last 30 years the idea of entrepreneurial education has exploded with classes offered by nearly 875 college and university entrepreneurship programs in the U.S.

"Entrepreneur" magazine’s article breaks down the various types of entrepreneurship programs and advises students how to choose one that meets their needs.

More than 30 criteria were used in the study, including course offerings, the quality of teaching and research faculty, business-community outreaches, research centers and institutes, degree and certificate offerings, and faculty and alumni evaluations.
