![]() Julia Mattern Professor of Flute View e-mail address | Log in to view e-mail w/your BSU Username MI 126 (765) 285-5412 Fax: 285-5401 School of Music Ball State University Muncie, IN 47306 Add Contact Info to Outlook Biography Julia Larson Mattern is Professor of Flute at Ball State University, flutist with the Musical Arts Woodwind Quintet, principal flutist with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, third flute/piccolo with the Russian Festival Orchestra in Indianapolis and a substitute flutist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Ft. Wayne Philharmonic. Dr. Mattern is also on the faculty of the ARIA International Summer Music Academy. She performs regularly on the Ball State Faculty Artist and Summer Chamber Music Series and her performances have been broadcast on WBST’s Encore program. Dr. Mattern received degrees in flute performance and pedagogy from Michigan State University (B.M.) and the University of Maryland (M.M. and D.M.A) and has performed in masterclasses for internationally-acclaimed flutists Michel Debost, Geoffrey Gilbert, Julius Baker, Trevor Wye, Robert Dick, Toshiko Kohno, Robert Willoughby, Amy Porter and Jeanne Baxtresser. Dr. Mattern has performed with the Lansing (MI) Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, National Chamber Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), National Gallery of Art Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), Prince Georges (MD) Philharmonic, Tupelo (MS) Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, Columbus (IN) Symphony and Marion (IN) Philharmonic. From 1984-89 she was active as a professional musician in the Washington, D.C. area, including performances at the National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum for Women in the Arts and the United States Capitol. An active member of the National Flute Association, Dr. Mattern has performed at NFA conventions in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Orlando, Phoenix, Columbus and Washington, D.C. She is a five-time winner of the NFA Convention Performer's Competition and a winner of the NFA Professional Flute Competition in 1992. Dr. Mattern has served the NFA as a judge for the Young Artist, Orchestral Masterclass, Newly Published Music, High School Soloist, High School Flute Choir and Convention Masterclass Competitions, as Workshops Coordinator for the 1993 and 1994 conventions, as Advertising Editor for The Flutist Quarterly and as a member of the Pedagogy Committee. Dr. Mattern has presented pedagogy workshops and served on college teaching panels at NFA conventions in San Diego, Chicago and Phoenix. In 2001, she directed the NFA High School Flute Choir at the Dallas convention. As a member of the Musical Arts Woodwind Quintet, Dr. Mattern has also performed at national conventions of the American Society of Composers, Music Educators National Conference, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Music Teachers National Association and the International Double Reed Society, appeared on Front Row, Center for public television and Backstage Indiana for public radio. She performed a solo recital of Philippe Gaubert’s flute compositions at the national symposium of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors in Chicago. Her CD "Soliloquy: Works for Solo Flute by Contemporary American Composers" will be released in 2005 on the Arizona University label. Dr. Mattern previously served as assistant professor of flute at Mississippi State University and was program chairman for the 1992 Mississippi Flute Association annual meeting. Her articles and flute music reviews have appeared in such national publications as Flute Talk, The Flutist Quarterly and The National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal. She is active as an adjudicator for various competitions and solo and ensemble festivals. Dr. Mattern has been a guest artist for the Tucson Flute Club and has presented solo recitals and masterclasses at colleges and universities throughout the midwest. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music by Music Teachers National Association. Her biography has been chosen for inclusion in The International Who's Who of Musicians, 2000 Outstanding Musicians of the Twentieth Century and Who's Who of American Women. She is the founder and coordinator of FluteFest, an annual event at Ball State University. Dr. Mattern's students have won or placed in the NFA's Orchestral and Masterclass competitions, Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Woodwind Competition, Kentucky Flute Society Young Artist Competition, Ft. Wayne Philharmonic Young Artist Competition, Indiana Music Teachers Association Collegiate Woodwind Competition, Kokomo Park Band Competition, Ball State University Concerto Competition (undergraduate and graduate), Mississippi Music Teachers Association Collegiate Woodwind Competition, Mississippi Music Educators Association Competition and Mississippi Flute Association Masterclass competition.
