Sound Connections: A Comprehensive Approach to Teaching Music Literacy

Scope: This workshop will focus on strategies and
materials for helping students develop music literacy skills as required by
national music content standard #5. Based on established learning theory and
research, the approach emphasizes pedagogical approaches that are effective
with all ages and in all settings - elementary, choral, and instrumental. The
rhythm and tonal systems allow for a seamless transition from the general music
class to beginning choir, band, and orchestra. Workshop participants will be
actively involved in reading and aural dictation activities, both from learning
and a teaching perspective. Participants are asked to register for this
workshop by June 1.

covering the rudiments of North Indian Music and providing introductory-level
participatory singing in Indian sargam (solfége) and in learning the rhythmic components
of the music. Listening experiences will also be included along with
discussions on constructing multi-cultural lessons for use in the elementary
and junior-high classroom.

development of advanced choral conducting techniques such as: refining the
conducting gesture, directing the nuance of phrase, choosing the appropriate
gesture, interpreting the score, stylistic awareness, developing a “conductor’s
ear”, and the expressive use of diction.

Special Needs

workshop will focus on the following aspects of teaching music to children with
special needs: (a) Navigating the Special Education System (Including Special
Education Law); (b) Adapting and Accommodating Children with Special Needs; and
(c) Issues associated with mainstreaming and inclusion. Students will also
receive training with actual students who struggle with disabilities through
fieldwork experiences with area summer special education programs.

Woodwind Repair for Band and
Orchestra Directors

Scope: Frequently encountered mechanical problems
with the five woodwind instruments will be discussed in this workshop. Repairs
will be demonstrated by an experienced repair technician. Students will also
have an opportunity for hands-on experience of the more common repair needs
encountered by instrumental music teachers.
