School of Music
Ball State University's master of music degree in performance (woodwinds emphasis) requires 30 credit hours of study. Minimum course requirements are outlined below.

Prerequisites  

  • Major Instrument: equivalent to B.M. degree
  • Minor Instrument: either 1) experience or demonstrated high‑level aptitude on an instrument other than the major instrument (called the secondary major instrument); no experience on other minor-related instrument necessary, or 2) skill on one, two, or three related minor instruments indicative of ability to meet secondary requirement

Required Courses 

  • Ensembles (2)
  • Major Applied Study: 4 in major instrument; 6 in secondary major or minor instruments (10)
  • Academic Music: History/Musicology--two courses, one must be core--and Theory/Composition--two courses, one must be core (9‑12)
  • Free Electives (0‑3)

Research

* Two recitals are required: one full recital on a major instrument, and one partial recital on a secondary instrument or minor instruments, selecting either 1) two semesters of study on a secondary major instrument with the presentation of a partial recital; two semesters of study on each of two minor-related instruments, or 2) two semesters of study on each of three minor-related instruments; presentation of at least one of them on a partial recital.
