School of Music
Ball State University's master of music degree in performance requires 30 credit hours of study. Minimum course requirements are outlined below.

Major in Music (26-29 Credit Hours) 

  • Ensembles: participation based on discussion involving the student, the major teacher, and the ensemble director (2-3)
  • Academic Music (Theory/Composition and History/Musicology): four courses--one core course minimum in history/musicology and one core course minimum in theory/composition (9-12)
Research

Electives (1‑4 Credit Hours)   

Options include the following:

  • Professionalizing courses for teachers, or
  • Electives in music or free electives

Voice majors are expected to be proficient in German, French, and Italian diction.
