School of Music

Master's Core Courses

All master's students in the Ball State School of Music are required to take course work in music history and music theory. Some master's programs require one course in each discipline, while others require two. One core course in each discipline must be selected from the following lists:

Core Courses in Music History

Core Courses in Music Theory

Placement Tests
All applicants must achieve acceptable scores on graduate placement tests in music history and music theory prior to enrolling in graduate-level history and theory courses.

Research Classes
All master's students also must take a course that introduces them to research methodology at the graduate level. In most master's programs, the student may choose either MUSED 668 Research in Music Education (3 hours) or MUHIS 600 Methodology and Bibliography in Musicology (3 hours). The research course is prescribed for the MM in music education (MUSED 668), and for the MM in music history or music theory (MUHIS 600).
