Professionalization Option for Teachers

Graduate students who are teachers have the opportunity to professionalize the standard all‑grade teaching certificate during their master's program in music at Ball State. The required 9 semester hours of professional education is completed by selecting one professional education course from each of the following three categories:

Category 1

  • MUSED 654 Seminar in Music Curriculum and Administration (3 hours)
  • MUSED 673 Band Rehearsal Laboratory (3 hours)
  • MUSED 674 Orchestra Rehearsal Laboratory (3 hours)
  • MUSED 675 Choral Rehearsal Laboratory (3 hours)

Category 2

An approved 3 semester hour course from secondary education (EDSEC) or general education (EDGEN). Please consult the sheet titled "Courses Approved to Meet BSU Requirements for Professionalizing a Standard All‑Grade or Secondary Teaching License," available from the Office of Graduate Advising and Certification in the Teachers College.

Category 3

An approved 3 semester hour course of general professional education or specialized professional education. Note: If a specialized course is desired, under some circumstances the student may select another music methods course from Category 1.

Professionalization requirements differ depending on the student's major area of study in the master's program and whether a second teaching area also is being professionalized. In all cases, students should consult the Office of Graduate Advising and Certification, Teachers College, for detailed information. Phone: (765) 285-1168 or (765) 285-5450.
