Graduate Research Options

Graduate students in the Ball State School of Music are required to fulfill the research requirement of the university. This requirement is met with course work taken at Ball State; transfer credits cannot be used. Options available to graduate students include the following plans:

Creative Project Recital
Creative project recitals in music take the form of a full performance recital, a lecture recital, or a composition recital. Projects usually are taken for 3 hours of credit; on occasion, the scope of the project merits a 6-hour registration. The creative project must be supported by a written report that includes background research and other significant information basic to the project and a thorough description of the project itself.

Research Methodology Course Plan
Master of arts students meet the research requirement by successfully completing MUSED 668, Research in Music Education (3 hours), or MUHIS 600, Methodology and Bibliography in Musicology (3 hours). The course plan option is not available to master of music students.

Research Paper
This paper must be an original study of non-thesis proportions showing that the student possesses the abilities to successfully pursue a research problem and to draw valid and significant conclusions from the data. Research papers are based upon experimental research, historical research, descriptive research, etc. The paper must be on a subject directly related to the student's area of concentration and must meet the approval of the major teacher and the director.

Thesis
This plan requires the student to present a thesis embodying the results of a study of some subject directly related to the area of specialization. The thesis must show that the student possesses the abilities to successfully pursue a research problem and to draw valid and significant conclusions from the data. The student must have a committee of three faculty members selected in consultation with the major teacher, the area chairperson, and the graduate coordinator.
