International Business Major
More companies than ever are involved in global trade—importing, exporting, sourcing parts overseas, and building global markets. That means increasing opportunities for students fluent in the intricacies of international business.

Our international business major offers an integrated, individualized course of study. In addition to a prescribed foundation of coursework, you'll have the opportunity to design a program that meets your individual business and cultural interests.

As an international business major, you'll benefit from:

  • an interdisciplinary combination of international business classes in marketing, management, finance and economics
  • opportunities to use language proficiency
  • experiential learning opportunities through field studies and internships
  • global studies in the humanities
  • opportunities to build expertise in a critical business function

The undergraduate major in international business requires completion of at least 126 credits that are divided into several groups of courses.

  • The first group is the University Core Curriculum that all undergraduate students must take, totaling 41 credit hours.
  • Second is the set of 13 foundation courses that all undergraduate business students must take, totaling 39 credit hours.
  • The third set includes 21 hours of specified international business coursework—a list of courses encompassing international business, economics, finance, management and marketing. Students must fulfill a functional area requirement by taking nine hours of approved 300- or 400-level business courses in one department. To fulfill an international studies/culture requirement, students must take six hours of approved international studies/culture coursework outside the Miller College of Business and in addition to the international/global requirement of the University Core Curriculum.
  • Finally, students are allowed to choose from general electives to round out their bachelor's degree.

You'll find complete details about program requirements in the Ball State University Undergraduate Catalog.

To become an undergraduate international business major

You may declare yourself a pre-business major during your freshman or sophomore year. To officially declare a major in any of the Miller College of Business bachelor degree programs (including information systems, operations management, and business and marketing education), you must be at least a junior and have fulfilled certain prerequisites.

As a prospective business student, you may take advantage of the periodic Connections programs in which all departments in the Miller College of Business participate throughout the year. You'll learn more about the department and its majors, and meet faculty members and other students exploring business majors.
