Descriptions of Availability
Many databases purchased by the Ball State University Libraries have access restrictions imposed by the providers of these databases. Below is a description of the different levels of availability described on the alphabetical and subject lists of databases.
Architecture: Limited to use only within the Architecture Library.
Bracken: Limited to use only within Bracken Library — often on a dedicated computer terminal available in the Reference Area (Bracken 1 West).
Campus: Any computer on the campus network can access these databases.
Indiana: The State of Indiana pays for a number of databases and makes them available to Indiana residents. These databases are accessible both on campus and from your home. If you are using a local internet service provider (ISP), you may use these databases immediately. If you use an ISP that serves several states (such as AOL or MSN) you will need to sign up for a temporary password to use these databases. An annual password will be sent through the U.S. mail and can take up to ten days to be delivered.
On/Off-Campus: Any computer on the campus network can access these databases. In addition, off-campus access is available to Ball State University faculty, staff, and students. For most databases with off-campus access, type in the Ball State login and password that you use to access your Outlook or VAX e-mail. Some databases require a second login-in. If you have questions, contact 765-285-1101.
SHSL: Limited to use only within the Science Health-Science Library.
Worldwide: Any computer connected to the Internet can access these databases.
