Visual Resources Collection
What's in the Visual Resources Collection?

Digital Images
A growing collection of digital images is available in the University Libraries' Digital Media Repository (DMR). The Architecture Images Collection includes high quality digital images purchased from vendors, gifts from faculty and students, and digital copies of many of the Visual Resources Collection's 119,000 35mm slides. Slides from the collection are being digitized and added to the DMR on an ongoing basis.

David R. Hermansen Slide Collection
The slide collection is named for the late David R. Hermansen, the first faculty member of the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) when the college was started in 1966. Professor Hermansen helped establish the Architecture Library and the Architecture Slide Collection, which was later named in his honor. Read more about Professor Hermansen on the CAP website (see Hermansen Biography under Related Links).

The Hermansen Slide Collection contains 119,000 slides of images relating to architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and, to a lesser extent, art. The entire slide collection has been cataloged. Records for individual slides and slide sets are included in the Ball State University Libraries CardCat.

Some highlights of the slide collection include:

  • Indiana Collection: a collection of more than 10,000 slides which document both historic and contemporary architecture in Indiana. To a lesser extent, examples of landscape architecture and planning in Indiana are also included. Also included is a comprehensive selection of Indiana courthouse slides. All Indiana counties are represented.
  • Weisse Slide Collection of Spatial Developments in Man's Physical and Social Environment: a collection of more than 1,000 slides produced by Rolf D. Weisse in 1968 for use in lectures related to urban design, city planning, regional planning and environmental planning.
