Why not use only Google or Yahoo to find images?
Search engines such as Google and Yahoo can help you find images on the web, but they do have some limitations.
- Search engines cannot find the images in collections like the Visual Resources Collection's Architecture Images Collection or many of the other sites listed below.
- Search engines are great at finding specific buildings and sites (the Eiffel Tower, Millennium Park, the Scottish Parliament); they are less helpful at finding broad topics (modern houses, urban parks, Art Deco buildings, English gardens).
- Many image collections offer additional search and display features that you won't find in a general search engine.

Google Image Search
Use the Advanced Image Search to specify image sizes (small, medium, or large). Google Image retrieves images based on text in the caption, on the page near the image, and other factors. Images retrieved may be copyright protected.

Cities and Buildings Database
The University of Washington's collection of nearly 10,000 ancient to contemporary images is for use by students, faculty, and the academic community.

Digital Library for the Decorative Arts and Material Culture

The Picture Collection
The New York Public Library's collection of 30,000 images from pre-1923 books, magazines, newspapers, photographs, prints, and postcards.
Pidgeon Audiovisual Digital Architectural Library
Collection of images and illustrated talks by architects on their work. The collection was started in 1979 and previously available as slide sets with accompanying audio tapes. Digitization is ongoing.
Society of Architectural Historians Image Exchange
Images contributed by SAH members. Collection divided into categories designed to accompany American or World Survey courses in architectural history.

The nearly 65,000 art and architecture images in this collection are searchable, but users may also browse the collection in 650 portfolios.
