1918 Born February 26, 1918 near Rochester, Indiana.
1939 Earned A.B. from Indiana University Bloomington.
1942 Earned M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine.
1943-1946 Served in the Air Corps in the United States Army during World War II, rising from a 1st rank lieutenant to captain.
1946-1972 Established and ran a family medical practice in Bremen, Indiana.
1952 Served as Marshall County Coroner.
1956-1958 Served as member of the Indiana House of Representatives.
1960-1972 Served as member of the Indiana House of Representatives.
1965 Became minority leader of the Indiana House of Representatives.
1967 - 1968 Served as vice chairman of the Legistlative Council for the Indiana House of Representatives.
1967 - 1972 Served as Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives.
1968 Ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for governor of Indiana.
1972 Elected for first term as governor of Indiana.
1974 Implemented Property Tax Relief Program.
1976 Re-elected for his second term as governor of Indiana.
1981-1985 Named the Lester Bibler Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
1985 Confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Ronald W. Reagan by the U.S. Senate (93-2) on December 13, 1985.
1988 Otis Bowen's purposed Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act H.R. 2470 signed into law (P.L. 100-360) on July 1, 1988.
1989 Completed service as Secretary of Health and Human Services on January 20, 1989.
2000 Completed his autobiography, entitled Doc: Memories from a Life in Public Service.
2007 Papers of Dr. Otis R. Bowen open for research in the Ball State University Libraries; ceremonies held to honor donation of papers to Ball State University.
