Departmental Honors In Modern Languages

In order to earn the designation "Departmental Honors in Modern Languages" (by Modern Languages, we mean French, German, Japanese* or Spanish) a student must complete the following requirements in addition to HONRS 499 Senior Honors Project or a comparable departmental equivalent.

Eligibility:

Any student whose GPA in Modern Languages is 3.25 or above and has established a minimum of a departmental major in at least one foreign language.

The student must enroll in a minimum of 32 hours and in four upper-division courses (300 or 400 level) in Modern Languages in which the student would qualify for honors credit.  The procedure to earn honors credit is as follows:

  1. During the first week of the class, the student must inform the professor teaching the course that he/she wishes to take the course for Departmental Honors credit.
  2. If the professor agrees, the student and the professor decide what type of academic work the student must do to earn honors credit.  This honors work might take the form of additional research and writing a creative project, a tutorial, review essay, additional reading, etc.
  3. The professor evaluates the work and determines honors credit.
  4. Departmental Honors course work is in addition to regular course requirements in all four (4) classes.

No course grade below "B" can be accepted for honors credit.

It is the student's responsibility to obtain a Departmental Honors form from the Honors College, to have it signed by the faculty member and to return the signed form to the Honors College.

Students who complete Departmental Honors requirements shall be awarded the designation "Departmental Honors in Modern Languages" on their official university transcript.  The achievement will be noted in the commencement program and in departmental records.
