Required:ANTH 311 (211) Ethnicity and Race. (3)
Explores the concepts of ethnicity and race and how they shape the interaction between individuals and groups in complex society. Devotes particular attention to the Western world, but also considers similar attitudes in other parts of the world.
ENG 491 (354) Literature of African-American Traditions. (3)
Survey of the African-American literary tradition in the United States.
Prerequisite: ENG 210.
Prerequisite recommended: at least two courses in literature or permission of the department chairperson.
HIST 210 Black History--The United States. (3)
A survey of blacks in America from the sixteenth century to the present. Emphasizes the effects of blacks on American culture and vice versa.

HIST 372 Africa Since 1500. (3)
Stresses the emergence of modern African civilization from roughly 1500 to the present, with particular emphasis on regions south of the Sahara.
OR
HIST 428 The Caribbean. (3)
The Central American republics and Cuba, Haiti, Santo Domingo, Venezuela, and Colombia since 1810, with emphasis on the twentieth century and the Cuban revolution.

MUHIS 439 Jazz History 1. (2)
Historic examination of jazz from 1890 to 1950. Analyzes outstanding style characteristics of each period from their beginnings to the 1950s, including ragtime, the Jazz Age, the Swing Era, and the bebop and cool periods.
Prerequisite: MUHIS 200.
POLS 475 Minority Group Politics. (3)
Deals with political impact of minority groups on American politics. Emphasizes both legal and extralegal means by which minority groups become involved in and influence public policy.
Prerequisite: POLS 130 or permission of the department chairperson.
SOC 421 Racial and Cultural Minorities in the United States. (3)
Examines the causes and consequences of prejudice and discrimination toward minority groups in America.
Prerequisite: SOC 100 plus 6 SOC hours, or permission of the instructor.
Students electing POLS 475 or SOC 421 should take appropriate University Core Curriculum courses to meet prerequisites.
