Alumni Profile: Brian Bishop

Brian Bishop

Master of Landscape Architecture, 2002

Current Employer: Ratio Architects Inc., Indianapolis

Brian Bishop is working in landscape architecture and urban planning at Ratio Architects Inc. in downtown Indianapolis. His range of project experience since graduating from Ball State University includes involvement in trail planning and design, park planning and design, urban design, and site development planning.

That diversity of work is one reason Brian changed his career to landscape architecture. After earning an undergraduate degree in public affairs from Indiana University, he worked in a regional planning agency, dealing in transportation planning and grant writing.

"There were no opportunities for creative outlet," he says. "I have always had an interest in art and design and I saw landscape architecture as an opportunity to express that. The field of landscape architecture is very broad as far as types of projects. It crosses over many disciplines. I liked the diversity of projects. I knew each job would be different."

His landscape architecture classes at Ball State allowed him to work on projects with real clients, including development plans for two parks.

"Being able to work with real-world clients was a plus," he says. "I also benefited from the diversity of faculty knowledge. That diversity helps you understand what the profession offers and the opportunities that are available."

Brian also learned skills through activities outside the M.L.A. curriculum, such as the Community-Based Projects program, which gave him experience in working with architects and urban planners.

"Ball State provided a strong base in design principles," he says. "I feel very well educated."
