What is Podcasting?

What differentiates a podcast from downloading or streaming audio is the delivery channel. Podcasts can be delivered to subscribers via a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) channel. This RSS feed contains a reference to the original audio file and delivers it to those who have previously subscribed. Like a magazine subscription for rich media, the RSS feed can deliver many types of content -- audio, video, and PDFs are just a few. There are dozens of tools one can use to subscribe to an RSS podcast feed.

Which type of podcast should I use?
Deciding on what type of podcast to create depends on your audience and their ability to access the content. For example, if your audience has limited access to broadband Internet, choosing video podcasts (vodcasts) would not be an appropriate choice since it would take a large amount of time to download. Other considerations will depend upon your skill level and time to develop these skills in order to produce the podcast episodes. The last thing you want to do is over-burden yourself with technical hurdles.

Here's a table to help you decide on which type of podcast you should use and the different features each one gives.
To get started creating a podcast, the first thing you will need to do is some pre-planning. With pre-planning, you will be able to gather all the resources you will need and determine a timeline for development, which all will lead to a more successful outcome. Please visit the Content Creators page for some suggestions for pre-planning.

One of the things you are going to need to decide right away is what type of podcast you are going to create.
