In
order to assist faculty and the iStudio staff with
the production process of creating content for
iTunes U, a production guide has been created in
order to facilitate communication and expectations
between staff and clients. Below are some
components to the production process that should be
addressed in order to ensure success. In the
preliminary consultation process, these areas will
be discussed to gain a clearer understanding and
expectation from the client.
Content to be considered for iTunes U will be vetted by committee review and approval for content, copyright, and production standards. Faculty who wish to gain more information and assistance should visit the Project Request page to schedule a consultation.
Production Design - The general style and treatment of the content in relation to its purpose and audience. The iStudio staff is committed to a professional process for the production of digital content. To ensure the success of this process, establishing clearly defined expectations and commitments from both iStudio staff and its clients will be essential. This page describes an overview of that process from the client's perspective and will be used for our initial consults. This will also clearly define the client's roll in relation to technical expertise, time commitments, and creative interests. The outcome of this consultation will result in a formal project specification developed by iStudio staff.
Copyright - When using copyrighted material, special considerations have to be taken into account before distributing your podcast. It's best to address these issues during the planning phase and to have all proper documentation in hand to prevent any delay or legal action at a later time.
Under the federal Fair Use Act and Teach Act there are some situations that allow for the use of copyrighted material without having to obtain the author's or creator's permission. For help determining whether the use of the copyrighted material qualifies, visit IUPUI's Fair Use Checklist.
Consent - When videotaping or capturing audio from individuals, it will be necessary to have them sign a consent form to receive permission to use their likeness and distribute it. This is especially essential when working with children and obtaining consent from their parents. To download and use a consent form, click here.
Nature of media - What type of podcast are you anticipating? There are three types of podcasts that you can create:
1). Audio
2). Enhanced (Audio & Images)
3). VodCast (Video that can contain still images as well)
Target audience - The answer to this question will help determine the appropriate venue to make your content accessible.
1). If your goal is in support of your class curriculum and for your students only, then using BSU's iWeb resources would be the more appropriate choice.
2). If you are creating content that highlights academic and professional endeavors within your research or department, using iTunes U might be the appropriate choice.
Your investment - Being able to determine your level of knowledge that you bring into the project will help in determining the level of involvement that the iStudio staff will have. The following areas of knowledge and skill will be addressed:
1). Technical
2). Creative
3). Content
Timeline - Having a timeline will help in determining staff availability, availability of resources, production schedules, and deadline for completion and delivery.
Pre-Production Needs -
Videography- newly acquired or existing
On-site or Off-site
Single or Multi Camera
Audio- newly acquired or existing
Scripting
Copyright, Permissions, and videography releases
Talent (Actors or voice over)
Content elements (PowerPoint, digital photographs, video clips, audio clips, credits)
Personnel needs (camera operator, post production editors)
Equipment needs
Post Production is the process of editing audio/video, re-production of content, and compression/encoding of audio/video. This is where your project comes together in a finished form to review and approve. Unplanned content elements might prolong the post-production time and completion. Re-capture video or audio that was poorly recorded or needed clarification might also delay completion, as can voice-overs that need particular voice treatments or significant additional scripting.
