IPR News garners 20 news awards in 2005

Indiana Public Radio News received 4 awards from the Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ), 10 awards from the Associated Press (AP), 5 from Network Indiana, plus the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast from the Radio & Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) – making IPR News the most honored radio news operation in the state of Indiana with a total of 20 awards in 2005.

Senior news correspondent Brian Beaver earned 15 of the station’s 20 news awards for his solo work. He also was named “Best Radio Reporter” in Indiana by the Associated Press for the third year in a row.

The Society for Professional Journalists gave IPR News a first-place award for Best Radio Newscast. The same newscast won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from RTNDA, a third-place award from the AP, and Honorable Mention from Network Indiana—thus sweeping the board by winning in all four competitions.

All of the Best Newscast awards recognized the December 23, 2004, 8:04 a.m. broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition™, anchored and edited for IPR by Stan Sollars. Assisting Sollars with this broadcast were telecommunications students Alyssa Ivanson and Derek Tucker from NewsLink Indiana, Ball State’s news convergence program.

IPR was one of only five public radio stations in large or small markets in RTNDA’s 14 regions to win the prestigious Murrow award.
