:: Ball State University - A Brief History

Ball State University was founded as Eastern Indiana Normal University when in 1918 the Ball brothers, a prominent Muncie family, bought the property and donated it to the state of Indiana.  In 1922, in recognition of the generosity of the Ball brothers, the institution's name was changed to Ball Teachers College and on February 8, 1965 the name was changed once again to the present Ball State University.  The designation of "University" was afforded to the institution in recognition of its phenomenal growth in enrollment, outstanding physical facilities, and the variety and quality of its educational programs.
