:: Conditional Admission
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduates applying to BSU may request conditional admission. If admitted these students would be required to take an English placement test at International Orientation. Please note that the English test is administered on the first day of orientation so it is imperative that the student complete the application in a timely manner in order to make the proper travel arrangements.
The placement test will determine how many English as a second language (ESL) courses will be required before beginning a full academic semester of courses. The English courses will be mandatory and students cannot begin a full selection of academic course work until the ESL courses are completed.
If you are an undergraduate who would like conditional admission you will need to apply, complete the application, and submit all the items requested.
You must request conditional admission. This can be stated in your 300-500 word autobiographical statement or you can send intadmit@bsu.edu an email/statement. The statement needs to indicate you wish to be considered for conditional admission and that you have read and understand the conditional admission policy above. If you do not request conditional admission you will be asked to submit an official TOEFL score.
You will be required to show the full amount of financial documentation requested.
A letter of conditional admission may be appropriate for undergraduate students who wish to apply to Ball State but who have not yet taken a TOEFL exam or who have a TOEFL score below 173 CBT/500 PBT.
:: TOEFL scores in the range of 173-210 CBT (500-547 PBT):
Undergraduate applicants with TOEFL scores in this range will be admitted directly to Ball State. Upon arrival, such students will be given an English Placement Exam which will determine the appropriate mix of English and academic courses the student should enroll in.
:: TOEFL scores below 173 CBT (below 500 PBT):
Undergraduate applicants who have not taken a TOEFL or who have scores below 173 will be admitted to Ball State's Intensive English Institute (IEI) and study English full-time.
Please email The Director of the Intensive English Program for additional information
