romania heading visit 2005
In summer 2004 a joint SLIM/Emporia1 and Anthropology/Ball State study visit was made to Lunca Ilvei, Romania.  Since 2004, students and faculty have been engaged in field research and write-up on a series of issues that tie qualitative research, information communications technology (ICT), community analysis and information transfer together.  We returned to Romania 2005 with 17 Ball State/Emporia students and continued to work on these issues, this time in Hotenti, a Maramureş village.

The beauty of Transylvania is something that catches all visitors by surprise. This view from the main road in the village shows the fences on the hills that identify individual villager's property.

Given the success of these two study visits, we would like to invite students to participate in a summer 2007 study visit (6 credit hrs) to Romania. Whether we go again of course will depend on enrollment numbers.  Students who are interested in issues described above and/or want to gain experience in field research and scholarly publication are invited to participate. From the 2004 visit to Lunca IIvei, we have published two papers. From the 2005 visit to Hoteni, two posters have been presented at MPLA and KLA_CULS conferences.  A number of other papers have been presented, published or are in the pipeline.

The 2007 study visit to Romania is scheduled for three weeks, May 7-28.  The lei, Romania's national currency, is weak against the dollar ($1 USD = 2.797 new RON lei) and students may apply for travel support.  Total costs, best guess, would be around $3,250.

1. SLIM/Emporia is an acronym for the School of Library and Information Management, Emporia State University, Emporia, KS.
