Studios Course Content

 

Studio 1

TYPE OF PROJECTS:

  • Small scale residential, commercial, product design, or graphic design
  • Emphases on creative conceptual visualization, hand skill building, and the process
  • 6 to 8 projects varying from 4 hours to 4 weeks
  • At least one project to be team approach

PRIMARY FOCUS:

  • Design Process/methodology
  • Graphic thinking /visual notes
  • Creativity /originality
  • Scale/proportion
  • Documenting space (sketch and photo documentation)
  • Anthropometry and ergonomics
  • Graphic design (page layout and composition)
  • 3-D in design process
  • Concepts sketching
  • Application of design principles and elements
  • Portfolio development
  • Assigned reading

NOT ALLOWED IN THIS COURSE:

  • Computer generated drawings
  • Selection of materials and finishes
  • Use of color
  • Design development

Studio 2

TYPE OF PROJECTS:

  • Small to medium scale interior spaces or product design
  • Introduction to research and programming processes.
  • Continue emphases on creative conceptual visualization, hand skill building, and process. Further emphases on graphic layout, elevations and 3-D as a design process
  • 6 to 8 projects varying from 4 hours to 4 weeks
  • At least one project to be team approach

PRIMARY FOCUS:

  • Introduction to programming
  • Introduction to space planning process  (goals/objectives, adjacency diagram, block diagram, criteria matrix, adjacency matrix, concept statement)
  • Introduction to color
  • Rendering
  • Design Process/methodology (C)

Studio 3

TYPE OF PROJECTS:

  • Medium scale commercial and residential interior design projects
  • Focus on accessibility and universal design, lighting and color, section as a design process. 
  • Two major projects typically one residential and one commercial (4 to 7 weeks duration) and several short term projects

Coordinate with FCSMR 314 and ITDPT 213 for exchange of assignment (s)

  • Project type: hospitality design and retail design.
  • Focus on construction detailing and sections as design communication, NCIDQ prep, wayfinding. Incorporate a national competition, when possible.
  • Two major projects.

          Coordinate with FCSMR 310 (Design Theory)\

PRIMARY FOCUS:

  • IIDA, ASID, or ISP Student Design Competition
  • NCIDQ preparation
  • Interior Construction Detailing
  • Wayfinding/signage and graphic identification
  • Decorative Accessories
  • Selection of sustainable/green materials (LEED)
  • Building Codes. (C)
  • Programming. (C)
  • Rendering (hand and computer generated). (C)

  • Two major projects. At least one with complete construction document
  • Focus on construction documents, custom design casegoods, and cabinetry, specification writing, and cost estimating

  • Construction Documents
  • Interior Construction Detailing
  • Custom designed furniture and cabinetry
  • Specification Writing
  • Cost estimating
  • Selection of sustainable/green materials (LEED). (C)
  • Programming (at a comprehensive level) (C)
