Interior Design
Documents Required for Admission to Bachelor Degree
To be considered for admission to the Interior Design Program, prospective students must provide the following information and documentation: 
  • Completion of the admission's process to Ball State University and a declaration of a major in the Interior Design Program, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Completed application form. Click here to download Interior Design(Major) Application form.
  • Two letters of recommendation on forms provided by the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. One letter must be from a high school teacher (or University Professor, if transferring); the second letter may be from a teacher, high school guidance counselor, or employer. Letters must be sent in sealed envelopes by the recommendors. Click here to download Recommendation form.
  • A typewritten or word-processed essay of 500 words or less in length which explains your interest in and career plans for Interior Design.  Please provide your signature on the submitted essay. Your signature will affirm that what you are submitting is your own original work.
  • Submission of Portfolio of related work is required. Please limit your Portfolio to Five pages of 8-1/2"x 11".   You are encouraged to bring a full size portfolio during the interview. Items appropriate for the portfolio submission may include high school class projects from Interior Design/Housing, Art,  AutoCAD, Ceramics, Painting, Sculpture, and Photography, if you have taken any of these courses. It may also include design or art works that you have done independently.  Attending the Youth Summer Design Forum at Ball State University is also an excellent way to build a strong portfolio before admittance into the program. These are online and on-ground summer workshops to help you build a portfolio and receive college credit, if accepted to our program. Visit www.bsu.edu/designforum for more information.

  • To be considered for admission to the interior design program, you must complete and submit this form to: Interior Design Program, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Ball State University, Muncie, IN 47306. Admission to this program is highly competitive, so students are strongly encouraged to apply early. For fall 2009 entry, applications must be received by the priority deadline of February 26, 2010; a personal interview will be scheduled for mid-March. For spring 2010 entry, applications must be received by the priority deadline of October 25, 2009; a personal interview will be scheduled for mid-November.

  • NOTE: GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or minimum score of 1450 on SAT or minimum score of 20 on the ACT is required for admission to the Interior design program.

    Please do not send transcripts and standardized test scores to the Interior Design admission committee. You will only report scores on the application.
