Ball State elementary education major Shannon O'Dell ( BS ‘00) was recognized recently as the winner of a 2007 teacher of the year at a U.S. Department of Defense school in Germany.

O'Dell teaches reading recovery and composition education at the Wetzel Elementary School in the Kaiserslautern School district. Before coming to Germany, O'Dell taught two years in North Carolina and one year in Indiana.

Teaching overseas can present many challenges and opportunities.  When interviewed for the Stars and Stripes newspaper article about the hardest part of her job, O'Dell responded "there isn't a hardest part of teaching. I've wanted to be a teacher since the third grade. I'm doing what I enjoy doing and I get paid for it. So I'm fortunate."

O'Dell, who lists West Chester Pennsylvania as her home town, has a personal tie to Ball State's alumni association through her cousin, Charlotte Shepperd (BA'68/MA'75), editor of the ALUMNUS magazine.
