An estimated 300 Ball State students from around the world attended the 2007 Presidents International Dinner in Cardinal Hall on January 26, 2007. The event was hosted by President Jo An Gora and the co-chairs of the International Women's Interest Group of the BSU Women's Club, Jeanette Jones and Sushma Sharma
Among the highlights of the evening were recognition of the David and Jacquolyne Werner Scholarship awardees for 2007, Mr. Pablo Acosta Acosta (Colombia), Mrs. Shveta Sharma (India) and Mr. Jongkoo Hong ( Korea) These awards, established in 2004, grant non-resident tuition and fees for three outstanding international students.
The Werners, both 1949, Ball State graduates, opened their home on Calvert Avenueto scores of international students over the years. The legacy of their hospitality lives on in the lives of many as well as in the hearts of those who receive this scholarship.
Favorite Friend awards were presented to Dr. and Mrs. Richard Artes, hosts to over 30 international students over the years. They were nominated by James Masisi, a 1984 graduate from Botswana. Idamae Waid was another Favorite Friend recipient, having hosted international students since 1970 in her home. Her nominator, Elsa Maria Ruiz Wilson (MA 74) and her husband John Wilson (MBA'74) traveled from Morton, Illinois to be present for the ceremony. The Favorite Friend awards, established in 2001, recognize Muncie-area residents whose kindnesses to international students at Ball State are ever remembered.
