As a future student you may have many questions about where you are going to live while studying at Ball State University. The following information is intended to answer such questions before your arrival. Please take time to read this very carefully.

Regular Residence Halls
Please note that first year undergraduates (freshman) students are required to live in the residence hall. Room and board cost for the nine-month academic year is approximately US $7,598. Two students live together in each room.
Year-Round Residence Hall (Shively Hall)
Room and board cost for the nine-month academic year is from $7,824 to $9,418. Double and single rooms with adjoining baths, four student apartments, and ten student suites are the types of accommodations available in these buildings. Most single rooms are usually reserved by returning residents.
INFORMATION COMMON TO BOTH GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE RESIDENCE HALLS
Roommates:
Roommates are assigned by the University. Race, religion, and creed are not considered in these decisions.
Room Facilities:
Each student is supplied with a bed, dresser, study desk and chair, easy chair, closet space, book shelves, and adequate lighting. You will need to supply a blanket, sheets, pillow, bedspread, wash cloths, and towels.
Other Services:
Kitchenettes are available for preparing in-between-meal snacks. Coin operated washing machines and dryers are also available for your convenience. A lounge with color television and recreational space is available.
Housing Application and Contract:
A deposit of $125.00 and the first month's payment will be needed when you complete your housing contract upon arrival on campus. You must notify the Center for International Programs of your housing plans by returning the attached "Acceptance/Arrival/Housing Form".
You will be given a residence hall contract after your arrival on campus. The first payment of room and board fees (approximately $600 for undergraduates and $700 for graduates) may be made after you arrive on campus, but it must be made before you will be permitted to move into the residence hall.
Off-Campus Housing:
You may choose to live in an apartment in the community. It is not possible to reserve off-campus housing prior to your arrival and for this reason finding a place just before the opening of school is difficult. You must expect to stay in a hotel until you find a place to live. The cost of staying in a hotel is approximately $50 to $75 per person per day.
Ball State University Apartments:
There are apartments on-campus that international students may wish to consider. With five floor plans (one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom) to choose from, we offer comfortable, affordable homes for single students and students with families. Rent includes electricity, heat, water, sewage and trash removal and a few furnished units are available. Students who are eligible include the following: those who are married, those with dependent children, those with 63 or more credit hours, or those age 21 years and older. Monthly rent ranges from $451 to $688. If you are interested in the Ball State University Apartments, complete an application on-line at www.bsu.edu/housing/ua.
Contracts:
Residence hall contracts cannot be broken during the academic year without the forfeiture of the US$125.00 deposit plus a portion of your remaining contract amount. If you are undecided at this time, consider this additional cost in your thinking. Exceptions that waive the contract forfeiture penalty are as follows: full-time student teaching, withdrawal from school on the recommendation of the University Health Service, academic disqualification, or graduation.
Housing Office:
Personnel in the Housing Office and the Center for International Programs are always available to assist you in any way possible.
