78: Freshman Orientation

General Information
Freshman Orientation is the perfect opportunity to stop by the iCare Corner for information about the purchase and maintenance of your required Apple laptop computer or for help setting up your laptop and getting it ready for classes. The iCare Corner is located across from the elevators at the north end of Teachers College. iCare Corner staff provide up-to-date information about specific requirements and software recommendations, as well as products and services advertised by Apple. We are eager to answer any Mac-related questions you have. Additionally, we have models available for demonstration so you can use the machines before purchasing one. Because we realize that the technical jargon associated with computers today can be somewhat intimidating, we can help you decide which one fits your individual needs and desires. We will also offer suggestions on software and accessory purchases.

Free Set-up Service
After you have purchased your machine at the Showcase Center, the iCare Corner staff will assist you with the its initial setup, creating your user and locating Ball State’s wireless network for use when you are on campus. During this approximately 30-minute setup time, we will discuss insurance options with you, as well as give first-time Mac users a tutorial of the Mac OS and explain the functions of your machine’s peripherals. The iCare Corner staff will also help you register for and install the software needed for your teacher education courses. Teacher education students who take advantage of this opportunity will be enterend in a drawing for thier choice of digital video camera or video ipod. An ipod nano and several iPod shuffles will also be given away.

After purchasing your MacBook or MacBook Pro, visit the iCare Corner to register your machine.

Additional iCare Corner Services
Should you encounter any software-related concerns, please come visit the iCare Corner! We will assist you with installing any student-purchased software, ensuring that it is correctly installed and located within the Applications folder. On the other hand, if your machine should have any software malfunctions, we can diagnose and correct a multitude of common and uncommon software problems.

The iCare Corner also acts as an access point to University Computing Services (UCS) hardware repair services. We will perform minor hardware repairs at the iCare Corner, such as installing RAM or reseating a wireless card. For more serious issues, we perform preliminary diagnostics, which speeds up the hardware repair process. However, before any hardware repairs are made, we will attempt to back up all your data to ensure that you do not lose your information. Once any hardware repair has been completed, simply visit us again at the iCare Corner to have any lost data moved back onto your machine!
