Master of Arts in Career & Technical Education

100% Online:
Convenient, Flexible, High Quality, Affordable

The Master of Arts in Career & Technical Education (CTE) offered by the Department of Technology is now 100% online.

The MA in Career and Technical Education is a good choice for those with a bachelor's degree who are interested in or who work in career technical education (a field previously known as vocational education.) This primarily includes those in the following three categories:

  • Secondary School CTE Teachers

  • Community College Instructors of Technical Courses

  • Industrial Trainers

But others may find the program useful, such as those who wish to eventually pursue a doctorate and teach at a university. Several optional tracks are available so students can customize their degree program.

Career and Technical Education covers a variety of fields. The teachers who enroll in this degree program typically teach subjects in the "trade and industry" areas, including auto body repair, heating ventilating and air conditioning, carpentry, plumbing, welding, and many more.

The Master of Arts in Career & Technical Education is designed to meet the needs of current vocational teachers who have already earned a bachelor's degree (in any area.) Many school districts increase a teacher's salary when they earn a master's degree, or even after taking just a few classes. In some states, a master's degree is required for professional teacher certification. This master's does not provide initial teacher licensure, but some of the courses it contains may be used in pursuit of a teaching license. You can take a single course in this degree program, or complete the entire degree.

Ball State University's Master of Arts in Career and Technical Education is NCATE accredited, and Ball State's graduate programs are regionally accredited. However, this degree does not offer initial teacher licensure. Those interested in licensure issues are directed to their state's office of teacher licensure.

In particular, Ball State's online MA in CTE offers the following benefits:

  • 100% online: No need to travel

  • Convenience: Allowing students to log in at times that fit their schedules

  • Flexibility: Choose among several optional tracks and electives

  • Personal Contact: With instructors and other professionals enrolled in the program

  • Economical: lower cost than face-to-face

  • Achievable: Only 30 credit hours - a thesis is optional

  • Meaningful: Quality education from professors who are leaders in their fields; intellectually stimulating; applicable to your work

  • Respected: NCATE and NCA accredited

Tuition Rates:

Graduate tuition for online courses through Ball State University's School of Extended Education has been less than on-campus tuition. The following rates were set by the BSU Board of Trustees.

Fall 2009 and Spring 2010:

  • In-state (Indiana Residents): $256 / credit ($768 for a 3-credit course)
  • Out-of-state: $454/credit ($1362 for a 3-credit course)

Summer 2010 through Spring 2011:

  • In-state (Indiana Residents): $266 / credit ($798 for a 3-credit course)
  • Out-of-state: $482/credit ($1446 for a 3-credit course)

Summer 2011:

  • In-state (Indiana Residents): $276 / credit ($828 for a 3-credit course)
  • Out-of-state: $510/credit ($1530 for a 3-credit course)

There is also a one-time $50 admission fee for US residents.

This tuition rate for online courses is considerably less than the rate for the same course taught by the same professor on-campus. For example, an on-campus 3-credit hour graduate course for out-of-state students in Spring 2010 costs $2628 plus fees. Even without considering extra fees, that same course taken online costs only 52% as much.

Out-of-state tuition is higher because Ball State receives partial state funding for each Indiana resident taking a course. For more information, see www.bsu.edu/distance/tuition/.
